What is the La Leona Waterfall Hike like?
La Leona Waterfall is found on Rio Blanco, a river with bright blue water that flows from Volcano Rincon de la Vieja. It’s stunning color makes for a beautiful contrast against the orange canyon walls. This hike will have you going up and down large boulders, passing through a cave, and swimming through a river with a slight current (don’t worry, you’ll have a rope to cling onto)!

At the end of the hike, you’ll arrive at a hidden waterfall surrounded by canyon walls. While it isn’t one of Costa Rica’s most impressive waterfalls, the hike to the waterfall makes for an unforgettable experience.
Throughout the hike there are spots you will wade in the river, as well as some cliff walls you can jump off from. A volcanic mud mask is a must on this hike to take in the magic of the mineral water you are swimming in.
La Leona is named after a legend of a big cat that lived near the waterfall, but there are many other enchanting stories that come from the area! Be sure to ask your guide about about the legends of Curubandé and Rincon de la Vieja!
Is La Leona safe for children or people will limited mobility?
As mentioned before, La Leona is a moderate hike. It requires some stamina, so it is best suited for people who exercise somewhat regularly. A lifejacket is provided and required for all hikers. Guides are also happy to help any hikers who are not great swimmers. Children under 4 years old are not permitted on this hike, but this can still be a great activity for adventurous older children.

How to Get to La Leona Waterfall
La Leona is located in the town of Curubandé, a short 25 minute drive from the Liberia Airport. La Leona Waterfall is easy to find on Google Maps. You can type La Leona Waterfall or click here for directions.
Parking & Road Conditions at La Leona
The roads leading to La Leona are paved and suitable for any vehicle. Overall, it is pretty easy to get to. There is also a parking lot reserved for hikers.
After parking, La Leona workers will guide you to the booth where you will pay and get a wristband. They will also give you a lifejacket and ensure you have appropriate footwear (be sure to come with a shoe or sandal that has a strap on the back! No flip flops). All hikers must enter with a guide, so if you have not already come with one, they will pair your group with an experienced guide.
You’ll then get a quick 4×4 ride to the beginning of the trail where your journey will begin!
What to Bring on La Leona Waterfall Hike
☀️ Reservation Details – If not reserving directly with the company, be sure to bring a screenshot of your reservation and follow the instructions provided on your tour page.
☀️ Bathing suit, Towels, & Change of clothes – Come wearing a bathing suit and cover-up/shorts, but leave the towels and extra clothes in the car to change into after the hike.
☀️ Sunscreen & Bugspray
☀️ Close-toed shoes, water shoes, or sandals with straps – These are required to be able to go on the hike and explore comfortably in the river.

When to Visit La Leona
The best time of year to go to La Leona is in the summer months (December-April) since you can expect a sunny, rain-free day. The clear mornings during the lighter months of the rainy season (May-August) can also be a good time to visit.
La Leona Waterfall is open during the months of September and October, but the river is subject to flash flooding which can be very dangerous. If you choose to go during these months, be sure to check directly with the La Leona via their Whatsapp number or website.
When reserving your tour you’ll see that groups leave about every hour from 7am-2pm. If you hope to see wildlife, it’s better to go early in the morning. The trail is usually most busy from 9am-12pm.
