¡Hola! My name is Kimi and I’m so happy you’re here!

Originally from the East Coast of the US, I have lived in a lot of places… But my absolute favorite place I’ve called home is Costa Rica.

In August 2023, I’ll have lived in Costa Rica about three years! I had gone back and forth about moving here since college. It wasn’t until the bleak quarantine of 2020, that I finally committed. I made the bravest decision of my life to move abroad and experience the true pura vida!

I now live just a few minutes from Hermosa Beach, one of the most popular destinations of Costa Rica. I have loved getting to know this breath-taking area just 40 minutes from the Liberia Airport of Guanacaste.

Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to explore the most amazing beaches of Guanacaste.

I have also learned a lot about the other destinations that are not part of most people’s typical Costa Rica itinerary. I am continuously searching for new hidden gems that are off the beaten path to make your trip unique and authentic.

Before my life in Guanacaste, I lived in Heredia which is a city just outside of San José. I studied in a Costa Rican university Monday through Wednesday, and for the remainder of the week I was off exploring. During these six months I learned so much about the Costa Rican culture and Costa Rica’s top destinations. I explored just about every major tourist destination in this country!

How It All Started

I first traveled to Costa Rica in 2016, when I packed up my bags to stay with a Costa Rican host family while studying at a university in Heredia. As a Spanish major, I could choose to study abroad in just about any Spanish-speaking country. I looked into Mexico, Ecuador, Spain, and Peru, but the place that really caught my eye was Costa Rica.

I began looking into this small country and realized what a gem it was! What called me to Costa Rica most was the biodiversity. Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world! It is also one of the older democracies in Latin America.

As far as the language, Costa Rica has one of the best accents for people who are learning Spanish. The more I learned about Costa Rica, the more I wanted to experience it for myself.

I settled on la Universidad Nacional (UNA) in Heredia, Costa Rica. I lived in an urban area that allowed me to meet lots of people. I was also just 40 minutes from San José, which is the perfect launching pad for anyone relying on public transportation to travel Costa Rica.

After that first taste in 2016, I became a repeat traveler. I used my summers to travel to Costa Rica and get to know different areas I hadn’t visited before. Over time my experiences diversified.

I went from being an international student at a Costa Rican university, to helping a couple different groups plan trips to this country, to researching and completing volunteer programs in public schools.

In 2020, I moved to Costa Rica to work as a full-time international teacher. My teaching job brought me to one of the most amazing parts of Costa Rica—Guanacaste. After some extensive apartment-searching, I settled on Playas del Coco. I found a quaint, little apartment that was just a three-minute walk from the beach.

I’ve lived in Costa Rica for almost three years now. I’ve learned even more about this unique country and a lot about myself through the process, as well!

My American friends joke that I must be a little crazy to be so in love with this country. My Tico friends, however, know that I’ve experienced the true pura vida. Falling in love was only a matter of time.
